A handsome officer upon his steed!

This was not supposed to depict any particular regiment, but instead is shameless romantic fantasy.
I'm working on trying to develop a more realistic way of drawing people that would suit my own tastes. I still have a long way to go, but this piece marks my departure from a standard shoujo anime look. I still love my bishounen, but I want to experiment with other ways of drawing them.
Compare this piece with an earlier cavalry officer I drew ([link]) and tell me what you think of my progression! I love feedback!

Copic markers on marker paper. I found the horse unexpectedly difficult to render. :p

*looks between the two faces* You know, honestly, I think a 'realistic' look would fall somewhere between this work's face and that of the piece you linked in the comments. The linked one is too soft and lacks realistic detail, but this one feels like too many planes rather than natural bone structure. Something in the middle of the soft and hard, perhaps.

Either way, I like seeing both works and your coloring of them, as always.

This is great! :) I love your coloring, as always--your attention to detail never fails to please. My main critique is to study the proportions of the face. The eyes should be midway down the skull, the nose should be about the length of an eye, be sure not to place the nose to close to the mouth, etc.

The eyes look much, much better compared to the cavalry officer. The part in his hair looks too wide, but I like the rest of his hairline. The feathers on his hat look amazing, I love all the detail in this piece.
